Where AI Helps at Work, and Where Your Judgment Still Leads

Diagram of AI comfort zone versus complex judgment

AI is great at speeding up everyday work. The trick is knowing when to lean on it, and when to stay in the driver’s seat.

In a large study with consultants, people using AI finished about 12% more work and about 25% faster, with better quality, when the task was inside AI’s comfort zone. On a tougher judgment call outside that zone, they were 19% less likely to get the right answer. (HBS / BCG study)

Researchers call this the jagged frontier: AI is strong in some places and still learning in others. That’s not a knock on the tool. It’s a map for using it well. To get better answers inside that zone, try these five AI prompt habits.

A simple habit

  1. Use AI for drafts, lists, and first passes.
  2. Take a closer look when the stakes are high.
  3. Notice for a week where it actually helps you.

Use AI where it shines. Keep the final call when it matters. Also remember that AI is not free to build, and its price follows how interest rates shape liquidity.
